Mr. Boogedy Lives in my Backyard

I have a cat. His name is Fabio. He is bigger than most cats, but he is also a big coward. He's afraid of mice and my carpet sweeper. If I let my hamster or gerbil run around the house in a ball, he runs off if they come near.

Lately he's been afraid of the boogey man in the backyard. It all started a couple weeks ago. I like to let him wander through the yard on a leash, as he is declawed. He usually finds it thrilling, although I find it boring to just stand around while he sleeps in the driveway. However, I take him out anyways, to keep the silly kitty happy. A couple weeks ago, I took him out on a walk. While he was exploring our backyard, someone on a bike went down a pathway behind our yard. Fabio heard the noise and got all scared. He took off running to the front door. While I was jogging behind him, I accidentally kicked a little bit of gravel. I think he thought the boogey man was still chasing him, because he ran off even quicker. When he got inside, he hid upstairs for a long time, his eyes wide and fur all puffed up.

Every time I've tried taking him out since, he's ran inside every time he hears a slight noise. I thought I would be nice and take him out today. All was going well. He was excited to be going out, until he walked near the backyard. He stopped and just stared, all tensed up. It was like he was looking to see if it was safe to go back there. Then, just when he was finally about to move, someone went down the street on a bike, making the same noise that Fabio's scary boogey man made. He ran to the door right away.

I didn't want to go in quite so soon, as it had taken longer to put his leash on and tie my shoes, than this entire outing had. Instead, I tried taking him somewhere else in the yard, but he didn't want to stay out. He just kept running for the door, so I took him in.

It looks like my cowardly kitty won't be going out anytime soon. Not at least until he gets over his phobia. But I'm sure it won't take long until he'll be sneaking out again. The next sunny day, he'll be lounging in the sun on the front steps. At least until Mr. Boogedy shows up again.

Talents Abound

Now that summer has rolled around, regardless of what the cold weather here says, I have once again gotten hooked on watching America's Got Talent. I always love that show. It's nice to see all the different kinds of talents everyone has, and I sometimes even find some great new singers to listen to. I was very pleased last year to find that the amazing Texas Tenors had a cd for download on itunes, and I'm still waiting for Kevin Skinner to release an album of his own.

This year's season is off to an exciting start. Now that David Hasselhoff has finally moved on and I don't have to endure his irritating "Hofftastic" jokes, the judges panel is even better this year with Howie Mandel as a new judge. His humor is much funnier and enjoyable than The Hoff's, and the best thing is, he doesn't sing! It's great to see judges Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan return as well. Although Piers can be tactless and sometimes downright nasty in his comments, I generally have to agree with most of his observations.

I have seen both amazing and downright horrible auditions so far this year. From one guy who claimed to be able to sneeze with his eyes open (he couldn't even manage one sneeze, by the way), to a guy who just blew into a turkey baster producing random notes, the show hasn't been lacking in hilariously horrid auditions. I'm always confused when some bad auditions actually make it through. For instance, an old lady who yodeled off-key and played keyboard atrociously somehow made it to Las Vegas.

This year there are also so many amazingly great acts that I can't even choose a favourite yet. Some of my favourites so far include Prince Poppycock, a guy dressed up in a renaissance-ish outfit singing opera, and all of the amazing illusionists. I still can't figure out how they do their tricks! Last night's show featured some of the best ones yet. I loved the group of college students playing rock music on classical instruments. I've never heard a better version of "Since You've Been Gone" yet. Also, a group of young guys did an amazing dance/acrobatics segment. My ultimate favourite from last night had to be a contestant from Puerto Rico. When he first came out, I didn't know if he would be really good or really bad. He was a really short, fine build guy, who spoke really fast with a high voice, but the second he started to sing, he had this really deep, rich powerful voice. He sounded just like if Pavarotti had walked onto the stage. He was amazing! I can't wait to hear him again.

Well, another episode is airing tonight, and I will be definitely hooked to the tv again. I can't wait to see what happens tonight!
